Frequently asked questions
Why work with an agency as a self-publishing author?
Being a self-publishing author can be a mix of excitement and uncertainty. We built Pufli because we believe it’s good to have a partner who gets it. We guide each book project through an organized but flexible creative process, based on collaboration, industry best practices, and the support of a Creative Director end-to-end.
What types of authors and projects do you work with?
Most of our clients are first-time children’s book authors who want to tell a story inspired by a personal life experience, their family, or important social values. If this sounds like you, we are eager to meet you!
How do I get started with Pufli Agency?
You can reach out to us directly at hello@pufliagency.com. We usually respond within 24 hours. If you'd like to learn more on your own about making a book, we recommend our free Playbook: How to Turn Your Story into a Fully Illustrated Book.
Do I need to have my manuscript finished before contacting you?
Your manuscript doesn't need to be complete, but it should be close to finished. You can start by exploring our roster of talented artists here. Keep in mind that artists can often adapt their styles to better match the intended look and feel of a project or emphasize certain characteristics.
What does your illustration process look like?
Our creative process is designed specifically to support self-publishing authors and guide those who are making a book for the first time. We have 4 key milestones: Character Development, Storyboard Sketches and Book Layout, Final Color Illustrations, and Covers. You can learn more in our “Services” and “How We Work” sections.
How long does a book project usually take?
Every project is different, but a standard 32-page picture book takes an average of 3 to 4 months to complete. We will set an estimated timeline at the beginning of the project, and it can vary depending on illustration complexity, scope, and revisions needed. If you're working toward a specific deadline, we'd be happy to discuss your goals and build around that together.
How much does an illustrated book project cost?
Each quote is tailored after we learn the author’s vision for the project. A standard 32-page book can range between three and five thousand US dollars, and we take into consideration factors such as the number of illustrated pages, book design, and the illustration type and complexity desired. To receive a personalized quote that aligns with your budget, we’d love to learn more about your vision. You can contact us at hello@pufliagency.com.
What deliverables do I receive when the project is complete?
Final deliverables include high-resolution digital files ready for publication. Whether it’s paperback, hardcover, or ebook, we’ve got you covered. We also provide properly formatted files optimized for major print-on-demand and self-publishing platforms, helping ensure a smooth transition into production.
What are your payment terms?
We know being a self-publishing author is hard, and that’s why we divide the project and payments into milestones that are spread out throughout the creative process. This approach keeps the project manageable and builds confidence as the work progresses. We are always working to include more options for the author’s convenience.
Who owns the intellectual property rights to the artwork?
For self-publishing authors, we work under a work-for-hire agreement. Upon project completion, the author retains full IP rights while preserving the illustrator’s attribution rights (artwork credit in the cover) and integrity rights (protection against unauthorized modifications). We discuss all ownership terms before the project begins and are always open to adapting agreements when specific publishing needs require it.
Do you support indie authors with other add-ons?
Yes! Our goal is for self-publishing authors to have access to the same creative resources and support typically available through traditional publishing houses. We also offer custom design work, book promotion assets, 3D modeling of characters for merchandise, and short animation videos.

What makes Pufli Agency different from hiring a freelance illustrator directly?
Hiring a freelance illustrator gives you access to an artist. Working with Pufli gives you access to an entire creative partnership. Avoid costly mistakes, the use of AI, poor project management, or low-quality artwork. Our mission is simple: help authors create books they're proud to publish. The result is a fun experience, with stronger creative decisions and artwork that truly brings your story to life.
